Trip Description
Destination Courses are all about taking your learning experiences to new and exciting sea kayaking destinations around the country and world! GKC combines inovative methods of coaching with prime sea kayak venues for unsurpassed learning and progression for you, the padder! On a destination course, you can expect to train hard, be challenged, see amazing sights, and have a ton of fun in the process!
2012's Level 4 Destination Course takes place on the rugged and remote Kachemak peninsula of southcentral Alaska. Upon your arrival in Anchorage, we'll drive down the Kenai Peninsual to the eclectic town of Homer. Our adventure continues as we pack the boats, food and gear onto a water taxi for an easy trip down to the outer coast. Once at our destination, we'll utilize an amazing complex of Yurts for our lodging base camp, with spectacular outer coast conditions at our fingertips! This amazing facility is comprised of four double occupancy Yurts (beds provided), a common yurt where we will have our meals and a shower yurt.
Each day will be a new experience as we focus on boat handling in currents (up to 5+ knots in this area), waves, wind, rocks an surf! The remoteness of the area, tidal paddling and open water navigation is sure to challenge our paddlers during the training. We'll complete our week with a 2-day wilderness journey back to Homer, AK.
Coaching for this course will be provided by GKC's Ryan Rushton and Tom Pogson of the Alaska Kayak School. Tom is a BCU L4 Coach and ACA L5 Instructor who has lived in Alaska the past 30 years. Both coaches are adept at utilizing conditions to provide fun and effective learning experiences for paddlers.
