Trip Description

Located on the coast of southern Georgia, Cumberland Island is known for it’s abundant wildlife, beautiful white sand beaches, massive Live Oak trees and historic ruins. The wildlife on the island includes sea turtles, wild turkeys, wild horses, armadillos and a myriad of bird species. During the trip, paddlers are sure to experience sun, sand, and a relaxing atmosphere.

Participants will stay at Emma’s B&B in the town of St. Mary’s, Georgia, experiencing true southern hospitality, graceful architecture and warm weather. Participants will have a chance to learn about the history of Cumberland Island as we take time to visit the park’s visitor center and other points of interest in St. Mary’s. Day paddles to the island, and on tidal creeks nearby, will allow the paddler to experience the natural beauty of this area, while exploring historic ruins of old Carnegie mansions located on the island will give us a taste of days gone by.

This trip is rated a GKC Level 1 trip. Participants on this trip should be able to paddle confidently at a beginner level as outline in our INTRO Class. Participants need not have taken a Level 2 class, but our instructors will offer instruction of many of the skills covered in a L2 class on the first morning of the trip. The Geneva Kayak Center’s Inn-Based Paddling Trips are designed for the adventurer looking to experience touring destinations of unparalleled scenic beauty, with the comfort of inn or lodge accommodations, fine dining and leisurely paddling itineraries. Our ACA instructors and BCU coaches are the perfect guides for these trips and will make your adventure truly remarkable!
