Trip Description
Join us for this unique yurt–to-yurt backcountry adventure in one of the Midwest’s most rugged wilderness environments – Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The park’s 59,000 acres comprise the largest true wilderness in the Midwest. Brawling, mountain-rivers cascade down gorges into wilderness lakes, while dark stands of virgin hemlock and pine forest soar on ridges along the shores of mighty Lake Superior.Traveling the backcountry of the “Porkies” is an experience that is unparalleled in the region. Our group will quickly leave signs of civilization and enter a world of deep powder, soaring trees and remote wilderness. Following two nights at our modern cabins situated on the shore of Lake Superior, our group will start a four-day, three-night snowshoe trip. The first two nights we will stay in yurts, and the final night of the trip will be in a backcountry cabin.
During our adventure, your trip guide will introduce you to winter backcountry travel skills including orienteering, comfort management, and backcountry cooking amongst other skills. Experience the joys of winter backcountry travel – no bugs, solitude and beautiful scenery, while leaving only markings of our snowshoes behind. At the end of each day of hiking our group will be rewarded by comfortable bunk beds and the warmth of a fire in the woodburning stove.
