GKC Level 4 Sea Kayak - Open Water Weekend

New for 2012 - Take this course as a local weekend (described below) or Destination Course in Alaska!

Geneva Kayak’s Level 4 Open Water Kayak Training is the most comprehensive (and FUN!) advancing sea paddler training available in the Great Lakes region and beyond! This training is designed to prepare the sea kayaker for either the ACA L4 Coastal Skills assessment or or the BCU 4* Sea Leader assessment and to increase the level of skill, understanding and knowledge demonstrated at the advanced level. This course is designed for a coastal/sea environment with winds up to Force 5 (16-20 knots)/Sea State 5, and is to be taken in a kayak suitable for journeying on the sea.

L4 Weekend Details

The GKC L4 Open Water Training Weekend utilizes some of the finest advanced sea kayak training areas in the Upper Midwest while the Destination Course travels to the tidal environment. Our tidal current training for the weakend course utilizes select features on the Menominee River, a high volume class II-III whitewater river that is well suited to long sea kayaks. On the river we’ll work on long boat rough water handling skills including eddy turns, peel outs, ferry glides and attainments as well as improving overall stability in the boat. The Menominee River consistently offers conditions with sufficient current that could only be found in areas on the sea with large tidal variances during spring tides. From the Menominee River, we’ll head east to Door County (or Marquette*) for the coastal training portion

In the coastal training portion of this trip, coaches will work with paddlers to develop seamanship, on and off water navigation, and technical skills for paddling in surf, following seas, and in a variety of wind conditions. We will cover leadership of groups in rough water, management of risks and rough water landings.
